THE FOUR GREAT LESSONS, WITH EASY TO FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS

A FLUXUS YEAR END SALE

Solway Gallery presents our final exhibition of 2024, named after Fluxus artist Ben Patterson’s print portfolio “How to Be Happy: The four great lessons, with easy to follow instructions.” The exhibition will present a variety of works by several members of the Fluxus Movement and more, including Ben Patterson, James Hill, Daniel Spoerri, Richard Hamilton, Peter Saul, Larry Miller, Al Hansen, Susan Spangenberg, Allan McCollum, Vito Acconci, Joel Otterson, Alan Rath, Jiří Kolář, Nam June Paik, Milton Glaser, Michael Mercil, Kirk Mangus, and William Anastasi.

During the 1960s and 1970s, the Fluxus Movement was a diverse community of collaborators and friends who influenced each other to think radically about art and its role in society. It was derived from the word flux, interpreted by George Maciunas in his 1963 manifesto as an act of flowing between, fusing, and often rejecting traditional mediums to “PROMOTE A REVOLUTIONARY FLOOD AND TIDE IN ART.” Fluxus artists successfully purged conventional experiences of art, most notably in their experiments in video, sound, performance, and conceptual art.

We welcome the New Year with the concepts of fluxus in mind: the ability to flow with the tides of our current political climate and imbue them with a positive energy to empower us as we face the next four years.
